Jewelry Design In ZBrush

Unlock Your Designs With The Leading Digital Sculpting Program: ZBrush.

Take Tomas Wittelsbach's ten week live, online course in the Art and Craft of digital sculpting for Jewelry Design AND join us for a two day event in Laguna Beach, CA on October 30th, 2017, JD3D.

First Class Is July 1st, 2017 at 10AM Pacific/ 1pm Eastern.

The 5 most important lessons:

  • The tools and techniques in ZBrush that work best for jewelry concepting and design
  • How to add intricate details, like sculptural elements and gemstones, to enhance your designs
  • How to take sizing into account and adjust your designs to fit your clients perfectly
  • Preparing your model to be 3D printed using ZBrush, MODO, and other industry standard software
  • How to convert your ZBrush sculpts into wearable physical objects, like rings, necklaces, and more

Why This Is Important

Jewelry creation is without a doubt filled with process, workflows and more process.

Traditional workflows can involve multiple castings in wax, re-sculpts and even casting failures as designers chase after the elusive elegance of this special art form.

3D design has, for years, held the promise of allowing us more freedom to create and imagine our work while also simplifying the process of creating jewelry. The catch is that  you need to master a whole new set of skills and workflows that can seem alien to a traditional artist.

However, including digital sculpting into your CAD and traditional practice holds immense potential and as more and more jewelers adopt these tools can you really afford to sit on the side lines?

Number One Challenge:

The number one challenge artists have learning digital sculpting in ZBrush is expecting the machine to do the work for you. ZBrush is not built like CAD programs. It doesn't work with sliders or by inputting numbers.

In order to master ZBrush, you have to treat it just like you do wax. You have to lean into it and learn to listen to it.

About Tomas

In 2008, Tomas was creating work that most jewelers thought were impossible to actually make.  Casting house after casting house turned him down. They simply wouldn't take the chance.

So, in 2009, he decided to take the next step in producing his jewelry and joined Green Lake Jewelry Works in Seattle to begin mastering the immensely complex production pipeline of jewelry.  It was there at Green Lake that he developed the skills and the connections that lead to his first production pieces and he knew that this could be done. His designs could become reality, after all.

Shortly afterwards, he meet William Henry and developed the William Henry line of jewelry to prove, once and for all, that producing his work on a massive scale was not only possible but opened up a whole new world of digital design.

Today, Tomas is busy traveling around the globe teaching companies how to integrate the possibilities of digital sculpting into their jewelry production pipeline and exploring the possibilities of 3D digital design and you get exclusive access to him over the next 8 weeks through our combination of Live, Online meetings and Community features.

"I was fortunate to come across Tomas's first class. I had been a jeweler for many years and had an interest in learning CAD. I was a complete newby to Zbrush, and I was happy that the course materials gave me enough understanding of the program to get started. By the end of the class I was hooked, Zbrush is a powerful tool for making jewelry. Since then I expanded into other cad programs, but there's nothing as powerful as Zbrush when it comes to thinking outside the box. Now I'm employed as a cad jeweler and loving my new job. I can't say enough about how the class propelled me forward into being a better jeweler, artist, and has given me the opportunity to do something I love for a living. Thanks to Tomas and Zbrush." - Terry Thayer

"I took Tomas's Jewelry Design class in december 2014. I now have an etsy online shop where I sell my pieces or do custom work and this is my website:" - cristina pavel

"I've been working 5 years with CAD, and from about 6 months with ZBrush, following only Uartsy's lessons. The results are not even comparable. I'm now trying to create preset bezels and stuff with the Zmodeler, while trying to get rid of the strict CAD methods I had to learn, in order to give space to a creation process that Tomas makes very clear in his lessons. I guess it is the most difficult part to teach, and he's very good at it. It finally does not depend of what my software can do, but what my ideas are." - Luca Sabbatini

"Very briefly, I was ready for a career change. My early work had been in the jewelry industry as a wax carver and a bench jeweler. I had been out of the industry for many years when I decided to become a 3D CAD Modeler. Beginning with Matrix/Rhino, I had the opportunity to do some freelancing, but it soon became very clear that the type of work that I wanted (and needed) to do would require an additional skillset to create highly sculptural and organic jewelry pieces – and ZBrush was the answer. Through ZBrushWorkshops I took the ZBrush Certification Course as well as Tomas’ Jewelry Design Course. The in-depth and expert training made all the difference for me and proved to be just what I needed to reach the next level of proficiency. After 2-1/2 years of honing my skills as a freelance modeler I was able to secure a position as a CAD Designer at a major fine jewelry store that does its own manufacturing. I am enjoying my work immensely and am grateful for ZBrushWorkshops and the role you have played in my success!" - Mark Iles

"I certainly would not be where I am today in Zbrush without the all the help Tomas has given within and outside of the courses offered at Zbrushworkshops." - Dylan Johnson, Cerriousdesign
